The Buffy television show

People will defend “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” with such mad frothing.  I can’t say I ever understood it.  I like “Firefly”. That is my Joss Whedon fan card for you.  I know he can write good stuff like that and bad stuff, like “Aliens Resurrection”.  First off I got some advice to the vampires of Sunnydale.  Buy a gun and shoot the slayer.

I can imagine coming up to the vampire leader and it going something like this:

Vampire Leader: My God! You’re back?  I’ve sent countless other vampires against the slayer before and they have all perished.

Vampire Ryan: Yeah. The job was very simple.  You told me you wanted this Buffy girl dead.  So I bought a gun and shot her.

Vampire Leader: Really? That’s all it took?  Was it at least a magic gun? One forged from a Hellmouth?

Vampire Ryan: No, I actually got it at the Fred Meyer after a waiting period.

Vampire Leader: So she didn’t do kung fu and attempt to stake you?

Vampire Ryan: Oh you bet your ass she did.  There is only so much kung fu will dodge against a bullet though.

Vampire Leader: So you just shot her.

Vampire Ryan: Pretty much.

Vampire Leader: Wow! I wasted so many vampire lives up against that witch. All this time we could have killed her with a gun.

Vampire Ryan: Yeah, well hindsight is 20/20 they say.

Vampire Leader: Indeed it is.
FIN

Also if she is the one slayer why the hell don’t evil things go to somewhere other than Sunnydale?  I’ve heard they are drawn there because of a Hellmouth, but that seems like a lame excuse.  Remove her from the equation. Clearly I am thinking too hard on this.  I haven’t seen enough of the series to really make an impression whether it’s good or bad.  So please excuse the rant.

Apocalypse: Robot A.I. vs. Zombie Plague.

Two years ago I was asked by one of my good friends if I thought it was more likely the world would end by sentient computers or through some sort of zombie plague.  It was an interesting question and I wanted to give you my answer I gave him.  I am curious what some of you might think as well if you have any thoughts on the matter
Though some time has past since I originally wrote most of this I think we are still miles away from true sentient artificial intelligence.  We are getting closer with leaps and bounds with neat stuff but I don't think A.I. will ever be perfected in such a way that it will become independent of us and attack us ala the “Terminator” or to a lesser extent “Blade Runner” if we have A.I it will likely follow the Asimov laws of robotics:

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
 2. A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
since that is the basis for what “iRobot” is about in a sense (as Asimov wrote the original story) I am not very sure how much it would deviate from the truth.  But it really is a stretch to say that whoever creates an autonomous machine for the sole reason of service to mankind would make them go against their own programming.  If anything those laws of robotics at least would be the core programming most folks would center most A.I. around.

Now we come to the meat of the question (no pun intended).  The vampire/zombie plague scenario.  Unlikely, but still in this day and age where you can turn on the news and see chaos in mob mentality its not exactly hard to imagine.

I think it is easier to imagine that if there was a biological sickness that rendered folks mindless of everything but the most basic instincts save primal group mentality. Then yeah people would likely be screwed.  I don’t think folks would ever be the actual walking dead or vampires but mindless and primal like rage zombies…that seems less a stretch. Vampires aren’t even an option because the whole friggin' world gets covered in sunlight and that is a pretty big thing to have an aversion to.

A zombie is at least more likely because also we know virus mutate constantly (every year you got to get a new offing flu shot and there is still no cure for a common cold).  So hell maybe a mutant genetic freak of a virus gets lucky and causes the doom of humanity

Wow when I put it that way I suppose that is the big contest isn't it?  The evolution and mutation of viruses vs. human A.I technology.  I’m still going go with the viral mutation on this one.  It seems to be the one more likely to happen in a realistic time span.

Superhero-rant

Something that always bothers me in Superhero movies is the constant whining about their powers.  Spiderman was the chief offender of this nonsense.  Ok imagine how much better his life would have been if instead of letting his Uncle Ben’s Ghost ride his ass for years with “With great power comes great responsibility” and taking responsibility for himself first.

He can’t keep a job because he is web slinging around saving people and his relationships fail as well.  So he is a miserable loser.  If that was Uncle Ben’s advice I’d shoot him myself.   Ok that is a bit harsh.  But he does need to eat, and live and frankly they do have professional people like police and emergency personnel who are properly trained in rescue as opposed so some asshole in tights just jumping around.

Now yes when a supervillain comes a knocking that is when it is useful to have him around and yes that is when he would be needed.   It’s a laughable situation.  But its time he could be using his good fortune to at least improve his situation.  Keep going to classes on time.  Leave saving the world to someone else like the X-men who also live in New York.

The X-men are sort of an oddity too.  Here we are to believe that mutants are a problem and that folks are for the most part are anti-mutant.  But somehow there are other’s that are fine with freaks like the Fantastic Four and Spider Man and what not.  Granted, I know those others are not technically mutants (they are mutates since they were not born with their powers) but still how the hell would folks differentiate the good old fashion prejudice.  It’s not as if they wear what they are on a sign or have it on their facebook page.

Also if I hear another person tell me that Batman has never killed people I’ll flip out.  I think of the Tim Burton movies as hilarious because there are a few times when he goes out of his way to straight up murder henchmen.

1. He uses the Batmobile to immolate some guys
2. He straps dynamite to a guy and throws him in the sewer.
3. He clocks one dude in the head with a church bell then drops him to his death.
4. Oh and let’s not forget fucking bombing Axis Chemicals.  With who knows how many people inside.
So yeah Batman in the Burton films is a terrorist.

Superman was another guy that they got all wrong in the remake.   If you’ve watched “Kill Bill part 2” Bill explains really well the reasoning for why Superman dresses like Clark Kent.  He pretends to be like us.  “He is weak…he’s unsure of himself…he’s a coward. Clark Kent is Superman’s critique on the whole human race.”  It’s a very well put point.  I didn’t think it was put together well in “Superman Returns” though.

In “Superman Returns” Brandon Routh seems to be just dressed up as Christopher Reeve.  And while it’s a noble attempt at a decent impression it doesn’t work when playing the man of steel.  Also I think they played too much that we are supposed to feel sorry for him because he is alone and the last of his race and is so different from everyone.  Ok, pull that sob train to rest.  I think I if there was a talk I could have with Superman it’d go a little like this:

Ryan: Holy shit! It’s Superman!

Superman: (crying) Yes it’s me. Though I wish it weren’t.

Ryan: Are you kidding me? What do you possibly have to feel bad about?

Superman: Well, I am the last living Kryptonian.  I have villains constantly out to kill me.  The woman I love as my alter ego won’t touch me and I feel like the world is falling apart around me and I can’t do everything.

Ryan: Well, it’s ok to feel overwhelmed my man.  But correct me if I am wrong you’re Superman.  People all over the world adore you.

Superman: Yeah.

Ryan: So if the one hatchet faced reporter isn’t into you certainly you deserve someone that likes you for you right?

Superman: That is no way to speak about Lois…..but you’re right.

Ryan: And tell me.  Aren’t you practically invulnerable almost to the point of being a minor deity?

Superman: Yes but if some villains have discovered my weaknesses and exploit them.

Ryan:  Well then.  No one said you have to fight them on your own.  Ask for help once in a while.  You know who doesn’t give a shit about Kryptonite?  Batman.  You know who isn’t powered by Earth’s yellow sun?  Wonder Woman.  You have options man.  You ever hear of the Justice League?

Superman: Of course I have heard of it.  I founded that piece of shit.

Ryan: Well use it for crying out loud.  Take a day off and let some of Earth’s other defenders take some of the load for a change.  Believe it or not the world was moving before you arrived.  It’ll continue without you.

Superman: I suppose it will.

Ryan: Look man. You have the bolt of Olympus handed to you.  You can use it for good or evil.  Obviously you use it for good.  But you are no good to anyone if you can’t take care of yourself.

Superman: You are right.  I feel better.  Smell you later Metropolis.  I’m going on a vacation.

Ryan: I can’t help feeling I’ve done good works today.

Look I know writers these days have a unique challenge when it comes to making superheroes that you can identify with.  But giving them a gift like god like power and then having them piss and moan about it is just a crime.   It’s their own fault 90% of the time for being written as stupid and one directional character that they don’t see the forest for the trees.   There are a few exceptions but in hero movies it’s more likely you just see someone that will fight crime because they are expected to.

Why I won’t be seeing “Let Me In”.- A rant

I know that it’s common practice to remake movies in Hollywood.  Especially nowadays when it seems like everything is trying to cash in on the originality of others. “Let the Right One In” was Swedish movie based on a book of the same name that came out four years prior.  It was critically loved worldwide. Now not even two years later the United States craps out “Let Me In”.

-Spoiler Alerts-

Now I know that the original novel is different from the original movie. That is to be expected.  But when I see the “Let Me In” preview I find myself confused.  The Swedish version had a cold haunting atmosphere that made it feel like you were alone. Unless this one was shot in the dark in the plains of the nothingness of Wyoming I don’t see how it will ever match that void.

Next we have a cast choice that leaves me flummoxed.  Why Chloe Moretz as the vampire character? Sure she was great in “Kick Ass” but they got it WILDLY wrong.  In the preview they say “She has the face of an angel.” As Lex Luthor would yell, “WRONG!”  One of the reasons the original was so fantastic was picking Lina Leandersson to play the vampire.  She was lovely and yet, androgynous, something was not quite right about her no matter how you looked at her she was still odd.

I am really confused why her older keeper has a sinister seeming bent toward the protagonist. In the original he played his part and met a tragic fate in caring for Eli.  It makes the love story a have a mix of tragedy because you know that our protagonist in the end has replaced him as Eli’s new protector for the rest of his life.  But instead they seem to want to make the protector out to be much more of a psycho.  At least that is what I gathered in the preview.  Maybe someone will tell me otherwise after seeing the new movie.

Last but not least is I wonder if they will have the big reveal. Can American audiences handle seeing Chloe Moretz as not as a girl.  In the novel, the vampire was born male and castrated at age 12 by the vampire that turned him. This is handled well in the original movie and it is not even an issue.  I wonder if it would even be touched upon in “Let Me In”.

Really I was curious at first when I heard the US was making a remake.  Two years is WAY too soon to remake something this recent and critically loved internationally. The previews for the new version now just bring my piss to a boil.  See the original if you ever get the chance. It’s the best vampire movie I’ve ever seen.  It’s beautiful; it’s haunting and really in terms of mood its perfection of the genre. To remake it is really a crime.
