Thoughts on Bright

Bright is a fun concept. The idea of a modern street action movie about orcs, elves and humans is a great idea. Joel Edgerton plays a fun orc character. Will Smith is so uncharismatic that it’s shocking. The movie is a mess of muddled plot points. Several of which don’t resolve which is frustrating. It feels like the movie Alien Nation. It is an okay movie at best and a overly complex movie at worst. The movie may have been a better television show idea.

Thoughts on Atomic Blonde

Atomic Blonde has fun action and decent actors performing like they care about actually making a good movie. The problem is that the story is dull and rips of the plots of Mission Impossible and Skyfall. It is okay and the soundtrack is full of fun 80s hits. It is fairly forgettable but entertaining.

Thoughts on Raw

Raw is a strange film. One part cannibal movie with a mix of anti hazing message and sexual awakening. It is brutal and unrealistic but it is at the very least well-executed for as exploitative and trashy this movie comes across. The acting is good, as is the cinematography, and the music choices. It is an interesting bit of international cinema that is entertaining enough despite the shlock.

Thoughts on Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is like a perfect mix of The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi. The characters are great and interesting and show loads of potential for future movies. The movies is fairly dark at times but the message of hope is all over the narrative and the humor is welcome. It elevates the overall story and raise the stakes but the finale seem more like an ending then a second chapter to a trilogy. If there is something that drags the movie down it is the pointless B plots that go nowhere Check it out if you can or you’re a fan.

Thoughts on Pottersville

Pottersville is okay for the most part. It feels like they are trying to mix Bigfoot with It’s A Wonderful Life. Even the title and name of the town is the alternate name of Bedford Falls without George Bailey. The ending is almost just like It’s A Wonderful Life. It has a great deal of talented actors performing but they feel a bit wasted on the material. Sadly, it just doesn’t bring enough originality to the table to be remarkable. It is fairly dull and forgettable and unless it gets a cult following I am sure it will fade into obscurity.

Thoughts on The Mummy (2017)

The Mummy is a modernized take on Universal classic movie of the same name. It was supposed to be the start of the Dark Universe cinematic universe. For the most part it is dull, all the characters save the villain are poorly developed characters, and the attempts are humor fall flat. I felt more for the Mummy and wanted her to succeed. I doubt it was the filmmakers intent. Worse yet, it is a dull film that rips off the fantastic movie, An American Werewolf in London. If maybe this movie was on cable it might be okay as time killer.  Otherwise i’d avoid it.

Great Show Recommendation

Ash vs Evil Dead is some of the most fun TV I've had the pleasure to come across. Not only does it enlarge the mythos behind the Evil Dead franchise, it is funny gory, and well made. It is a must see for horror fans and totally worth checking out.

Thoughts on El Camino Christmas

El Camino Christmas is a fun dark comedy. It has the spirit of the holidays and is still dark and funny so audiences will appreciate the originality. The cast really sells the fairly simple story and makes it really worth watching. If you are tired of the standard sacrine movie this will be a welcome change of pace.

Thoughts on Willow Creek

Willow Creek is a fine movie. It has decent acting and a fun plot. If it suffers it is from being almost beat for beat like The Blair Witch Project but with a Bigfoot instead of a witch. It’s a fine movie to check out.

Thoughts on Alien: Covenant

Alien: Covenant has amazing camera work and is a beautiful movie. The visuals are stunning. It still suffers a bit from a plot we are all to familiar with and tropes that make the movie difficult to fully immerse the audience. For example the ship is perpetually in "mood lighting" mode. The crew of colonists are incredibly stupid. Their ship encounters a problem on the way to a planet that they intend to colonize. So they abandon the idea of goin got that planet in favor for a planet that is nearby and seems habitable. They take no precautions and walk into the danger like fools. In a lot of ways the movie hits the same beats as the original Alien film and it becomes predictable. The CGI alien is not as cool looking as the practical effects of the past films. Michael Fassbender at least makes this movie interesting with his dual roles. As a fan of the franchise it is worth checking out but will be forgotten pretty quick.
