Thoughts on Civil War

Civil War is a film about traveling journalists in the United States during a modern Civil War. It is heavy at times and is genuine in its message. The acting is great and it’s very well-paced. Check it out for something that hits a little close to home without being hopeless.

Thoughts on Smile

Smile is a horror film about a demon that scares folks with it’s grim rictus smile. Sosie Bacon plays her role with a lot of sincerity. It’s a fun movie that could very well be a metaphor for trauma and putting a smile on to hide. At the very least it’s a cool demon tormenting folks.

Thoughts on Suitable Flesh

Suitable Flesh is a horror film based on the works of HP Lovecraft. It’s a fun, sexy, stylistic movie. The characters and dialogue are at times cheesy, but Barbara Crampton and Heather Graham try to play it serious. It absolutely has flaws. The ADR is laughable. Check it out, if you dig Lovecraftian or erotic stories with a vein of movies like Fallen or Skeleton Key.

Thoughts on Immaculate

Immaculate is a thriller starring Sydney Sweeney. It is a fine horror film that doesn’t over stay its welcome with a tight runtime. The acting is fine and story is equally adequate. EThe atmosphere takes a backseat to a gory third act that ends abruptly. Check it out if you like Rosemary’s Baby and The Omen.

Thoughts on There’s Someone Inside Your House

There’s Someone Inside Your House is a trite slasher. The plot is forgettable. The characters are bland and dull. It doesn’t do anything bold or new. It’s fine if you are just wanting a by-the-book slasher movie.

Thoughts on Late Night With The Devil.

Late Night With The Devil is a horror movie set on an episode of a 1970s talk show. It’s fun and strange. The story and acting is compelling and entertaining. Check it out if you want to see a fresh horror take.

Thoughts on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a sequel that felt needlessly bloated. Michael Keaton stands out in a cast of very talented actors that seems to largely do thwirn. The story is bare bones with a glut of unnecessary characters that add to the runtime and do nothing to further the plot or develop the characters. In short, stick with the original.

Thoughts on Deadpool and Wolverine

Deadpool and Wolverine is the latest Deadpool movie. It is cameo-filled and full of blood and dark humor. It’s entertaining and self-aware. It’s not the best movie, it won’t be winning awards. But it certainly isn’t the worst movie either. It’s good, and that is all you need from a comic book movie at times.

Thoughts on Despicable Me 4

Despicable Me 4 is the latest of the very popular series of movies featuring the minions. The move is unfunny, and lacking even a basic story. With such a bevy of characters  many are relegated to inane side plots that add nothing to the narrative. I am also a middle-aged man, and not the primary target for this movie. My kids liked it a lot. If that is the audience you need to entertain, it will do the trick.

Thoughts in Renfield

Renfield is a dark comedy about Dracula’s familiar. It has fun performances by Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage. The story has some weak spots but in terms of the tone of the movie it all works to make the movie fun. It won’t win awards but it was entertaining, at the very least. Check it out if you like horror and dark comedy.

Thoughts on Inside Out 2

Inside Out 2 is a sequel to the Pixar film, Inside Out. The story is a good follow up to the first film. The characters show growth and the story is compelling. The addition of new emotions really help create a relevant and poignant story of a growing girl who is coming to terms with puberty. Check it out if you liked the first film.

Thoughts on Cook Off!

Cook Off! is the 2017 mockumentary. If a Christopher Guest movie and Reno 911 had a baby it would look like this. It has some funny moments and clever characters. It’s worth checking out. It doesn’t have a big budget, but it’s got aome good comedic charm.

Thoughts on Furiosa

Furiosa is the prequel to the movie, Mad Max: Fury Road. Anya Taylor Joy and Chris Hemsworth do a great job making these characters fully dimensional. As a story it is very good and the stunts are a lot of fun. It is not as great as Fury Road but it still feels like a solid story from that world.

Thoughts on Five Nights at Freddys

Five Nights at Freddy’s is a movie based on a popular video game. The movie has significant talent involved with a decent cast. There are clever shots and Matthew Lillard seem to be taking it seriously. It isn’t fantastic by my tastes, but kids that love the game will dig the movie.

Thoughts on Dune part 2

Dune part 2 covers the second half of the Dune novel. It is visually appealing and the additional characters are introduced. It feels unfinished at times. I can’t tell if they are waiting to do Dune Messiah. It is a very good movie that requires part 1 to understand. I think I appreciated the character building more in the first movie. However, it is still good movie and a must see for fans of the book.

Thoughts on X

X is a horror film that takes place in 1979. The characters are well acted and the cinematography is very good. I wish I liked it more. It largely made me uncomfortable, which is in no way the sign of a bad movie, but it did make it difficult for me to get enjoy it as a whole. It wasn’t for me, but it is very good otherwise.
