Thoughts on A Futile and Stupid Gesture
A Futile and Stupid Gesture is a fine movie. The acting is fine and the subject is interesting but the tone is muddled. At times it plays itself like a comedy and other times a drama and then there are times when dramatic parts are undercut with comedy and visa versa. The movie just ends abruptly which is jarring. It is a fine film choice for a mild distraction but it is fairly forgettable.

Thoughts on IT
IT is a solid movie that keeps a lot of the charm of the miniseries and cuts out the B.S. The acting is great and the kids are really quirky enough to hope for their survival. The parts that stuck out as flawed is that Richie is annoying (but he is kind of supposed to be), the frights are mostly jump scares, and they modernized the time period but the Stephen King stereotypical bully is still in full force. As a whole it’s a fine movie and I look forward to part 2.
Thoughts on Man Vs.
Man Vs. is an interesting take on the survivor reality shows. The build up is really great and the performances seem genuine. The twist is a bit silly and just a bit disappointing. As a whole the movie is at least entertaining. Check it out if you are looking for something fun. The premise is good and the build up makes up for the silly aspects.

Thoughts on The Blackcoats Daughter
The Blackcoats Daughter is a pretty impressive horror film. It is subtle and creates a tone of nightmarish unease. With great performances and a slow burn script the film is quite haunting. It clearly doesn’t think the audience is dumb by hitting them over the head with exposition. Instead it lets the story unfold as the horror begins to take hold. Check it out if you are looking for a smart, subtle, and effective horror story.
Thoughts on The Polka King
The Polka King is an interesting look at the Jan Lewan Ponzi scheme. He is an interesting character and the actors do a great job with this dark comedy. The problem is that the story is not very funny and you are really just watching a strange character hit rock bottom. It is a depressing movie and the tone is a bit muddled. Still, it is interesting and well-acted so it is worth checking out if the preview interests you.

Thoughts on Ingrid Goes West
Ingrid Goes West is probably the best Aubrey Plaza movie since The To Do List. It really is a fascinating take on the stalker relationship in a social media world. It feels like it could easily be a horror movie. Elizabeth Olsen plays the object of Ingrid’s obsession. The movie has a great cast and a relevant tone. It also touches on the illusion of life perfection in social media. Check it out if you are looking for something clever and worth a damn.

Thoughts on Sharknado 5
Sharknado 5 is what happens when the Asylum makes a movie where everyone is in on the joke. If you like puns and references to better movies then it is at least a fun distraction. If you want a seriously good movie with decent acting then look elsewhere. As if the other films weren’t ridiculous enough they are introducing magic to the storyline in a desperate attempt to make it original. It is schlock but sadly it is not very good schlock.

Thoughts on I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore
I Don’t Feel at Home in this World Anymore is a fun, dark comedy. It is about people being vicimized seeking justice. The acting is good and it is fantastic to see Melanie Lynskey getting better parts. It is a clever movie that handles the dark mood and subject matter really well. It is worth seeing for anyone looking for something a bit different.

Thoughts on Creep 2
Creep 2 is a decent follow up to Creep. The main character remains the same and his charm and demeanor still sell the story. The performance are genuine and thrilling. It really is a good sequel that is worth checking out if you enjoyed the first film. Good subtle horror at its finest.

Thoughts on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is another bland entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. By now it feels so forced and dull with no really original ideas to keep afloat. It just becomes a muddled mess as the film progesses. The first movie was fun but they have gotten progressively worse with every new entry. The story is bland and the characters are lazily written with no chemistry amongst them. It is worth a watch on Netflix if desperate but is easily forgotten.

Thoughts on The Hit Man’s Bodyguard
The Hit Man’s Bodyguard is an okay action comedy. The characters have a fun chemistry. The story itself is a bit trite. The script is sort of weak so it makes up for it with swear words. Still, there are a few fun moments that make it a worthy rental. It might be a bit forgettable but it will kill some time. Sometimes, that is all you need.
